-She Flies With Her Own Wings-

I have to admit, the idea of this 30 day blog challenge AND my blog name came from Ashley Hanson. She and I went to college together and she is one of the nicest girls you will ever meet. She doesn’t know it, but she inspired me (along with my friend Jenna) to start this blog and have a place to put my thoughts. You can read her blog at http://www.wingsonourwaydown.blogspot.com. 

Anyway, Ashley did this 30 day challenge and one of the days tells you to write your favorite inspirational quote. Well, Ashley’s was the latin form of “She flies with her own wings.” I immediately fell in love with it. I know zero latin and can’t even pronounce the latin form of this quote (Alis volat propriis), but it was the perfect description of who I am becoming/striving to be. 

Until very recently, I was a bit of a people pleaser and a HUGE parent pleaser. My decisions were largely based on whether my parents would approve or disapprove. I went so far as to skip experiences in college because I was afraid they would be disappointed. It was not until very, very recently that I decided to change. It seemed so selfish to me at first, to do solely what made ME happy, but I realized that life is short. I want to look back on my life and be proud, fulfilled and happy with what I’ve done.

So, my blog name, to me is a constant reminder that what I make of my life will not be based on anyone but myself. My parents gave me a foundation to work from, but I have so much more that I want to learn, see and do, and it’s completely up to me to make this life exactly how I want it. And that’s my plan. This blog will just tell the story.
